Is There A Grace Period With Car Insurance

Reader’s Question:

Is there a grace period where I can use car insurance on my new car before getting a new auto insurance?

Michelle

Chicago IL

There is no actual law that gives you a grace period before acquiring an auto insurance for your new car. Most states require car owners to have the new car insured before they can use it or drive it around. But you need to know first, does your existing auto insurance company temporarily cover a new car? It may be adding a new one or just replacing your old vehicle. There are actually auto insurance companies that allow you to extend your existing auto insurance to a new car temporarily.

Since there is no state law regarding extending existing auto insurance to a new car, auto insurance companies will have their own rules and regulations about this. Usually, auto insurance companies will give you 30 days to register your new car and inform them of the new vehicle and some companies even let you extend your existing policy to a new car for about 14days depending on the auto insurance company guidelines. Note as well that there are insurance companies that will not allow you to do that.

If you were able to extend you existing policy to a new car before actually putting it under your policy you must know that the coverage that will be extended to your new car will be exactly the same as the existing policy. No more, no less. If your existing policy is only for a Liability Coverage with minimum limits for your old vehicle, then you will only have Liability coverage with minimum limits for your new car until you inform you auto
insurance company of any changes or the “grace period” expires. Remember some insurance companies will only give you 14days extension period. You may need additional coverage especially if the new car will be financed. Banks technically will require at least Comprehensive and Collision coverage.

You must contact your auto insurance company as soon as possible or within a certain period of time about you new vehicle because your coverage may not be effective if you don’t. They do give you a deadline or a specific amount of time to notify them about your new car. Usually it’s 30 days notification period or less. This will depend on the guidelines of the insurer. It is best to contact your auto insurance company about your new vehicle, this will help you avoid conflict on your policy.

Reader’s Question:

My daughter just received her 4th speeding ticket citation. I am just wondering if her car insurance will be cancelled by her car insurance company? Thanks.

Robert

Cleveland, OH

In many states, has a point system, that is being used to check your driving history. In general, each type of violation has an assigned point value. If you get convicted of any of this infraction, the appropriate number of points is added to your driving record. The more points you on your driving record, the worse your record will be.

Car insurance providers typically has the right to check your driving record if you apply for car insurance policy. If they found out that you have a bad driving record, you will get high car insurance rates from these insurers. Car insurance companies typically use their own point and rating system to figure the amount of the rate increase. Although these systems can differ from one insurer to the other, most car insurance companies use a system based on the Safe Driver Insurance Plan issued by ISO.

Every car insurance company has their own car insurance rating system and guidelines regarding point system before they accept or cancel car insurance policy. I suggest that you contact the car insurance company to get more information.

Reader’s Question:

I have never been in accident here in Ohio so obviously, I have never filed an insurance claim. If ever I will be in an accident, how would I start the process of filing a claim?

Seth

Youngstown, OH

No one would be happy to be involved in a vehicular accident and if luck is on your side, you can get out of it with only minor injuries, if any at all. Certainly, you need to file vehicle insurance claims with your insurer if you get into an accident and at times, this could be as horrible as the accident itself.

Remember that vehicle insurance claims would begin at the place where the accident occurred. Even if it is a minor traffic mishap, you must still call the authorities and let them make an accident report. Don’t acknowledge that the accident was your fault even if the police put in writing that you are at-fault because you could still challenge this in court. You also have to ensure that you acquire the names and addresses of all the witnesses to the accident. You could include this information to your vehicle insurance claim so your insurer could confirm your statements.

You have to inform your vehicle insurance agent in Ohio immediately after the collision. It’s extremely necessary that you get the process started for your vehicle insurance claim. If you are eligible for compensation, you could have your vehicle repaired fast and get back to driving. It’s horrible to be involved in a traffic collision but filing vehicle insurance claim doesn’t have to be so hard if you follow the right process.

Reader’s Question:

Where can I find cheap car insurance for my mom who will turn 65 years old very soon? I want to surprise her with a new car.

Kent

Cleveland, OH

I must say, isn’t that such a sweet thing to do for your mom? You must be such a sweet child to be surprising your mom like this. And for that, I shall grant you the knowledge on how to get about your car insurance needs. Paying for car insurance is what most American household find to be such a challenge, especially because the price of protecting yourself and your vehicle is no joke. So, if you are going to find cheap car insurance for your mom, you will need all the help you can get.

The best thing for you to do is not to find cheap car insurance but instead find a car insurance policy with good coverage plans which at the same time does not cost unreasonable for you. You should not make the mistake of buying cheap car insurance at the expense of your mom’s protection. Most car insurance policies that initially cost cheap do not really have the necessary coverage enough to insure your mom and her vehicle. So, what you should do is just try to lower the price of a reasonably priced policy through the use of discounts.

Your mom is entitled to senior citizen discounts since she’s 65 years old. Senior citizen discounts are given by most establishments and the car insurance industry is no exemption. You can cut to as much as 10% from the original price, and 10% is no joke. Furthermore, female driver discounts could also be of help on cutting costs. Also, you might want to consider buying an older car loaded with lots of safety features. An older and safer car is always cheaper to insure than new cars with few safety features.

These are all the discounts I could think of based on the information that you have given. But I am sure there still are other discounts that your mom could use to lower her premium. Just ask around.

Auto Insurance Versus Auto Warranty Mississippi MS

Reader’s Question:

Do I still have to buy auto insurance when my auto warranty is not going to expire any time soon? What are the advantages of having auto insurance versus having auto warranty here in Mississippi?

Mason

Jackson, MS

Well, there is a very big and essential difference between these two: auto insurance and auto warranty.

As with a lot of products, auto warranty is always given by the vehicle manufacturer to the consumer as a form of assurance that the vehicle is not defective. This is a direct agreement between the consumer and the dealer. The basic factory warranty lasts for a limited amount of time, usually around three years, or a limited amount of mileage. Basic factory warranty covers the payment for most repairs and the labor involved. You just have to be sure which coverage you have by double-checking your auto warranty.

Now, auto insurance also covers for repairs of damages for a various amount of reasons. But you cannot skip availing of auto insurance because it is mandated by law in each state for every driver to carry at least the basic liability auto insurance coverage. This is what serves as assurance to the state’s department of motor vehicles that a driver is capable of paying for damages when he or she gets into a car accident. Unfortunately, Mississippi is not exempted from this.

Also, sure, your basic factory warranty may be able to cover for some repairs for your vehicle, but what about the other damages you would have when you get into an accident? What if you are at fault and the other party needs medical attention? Who pays for the damages to the properties of other people involved? This is where auto insurance steps in. Auto warranty shall cover repairs only for your car, whereas auto insurance has wider coverage.

Now, do you clearly see the difference of auto insurance versus auto warranty?

Police Reports and Auto Insurance Coverage Maryland MD

Reader’s Question:

I was recently involved in a fender-bender in Maryland where my car sustained minor damages. I haven’t filed a police report yet. Will my auto insurance company cover for the costs of repairs?

Anthony

Bethesda, MD

Maryland is one of the states that observe the no-fault act. This means that if Maryland motorists ever get involve in any car accident, then they will be covered by their own auto insurance company. This essentially means that all motorists need to carry the Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance in their policy to pay for medical care, funeral expenses if needed, and a month’s worth of lost wages. In addition to PIP, minimum liability has to be purchased. This safeguards the insured if he or she causes an accident and the other motorist’s coverage was used up. The insured’s liability insurance takes care of the remaining amount.

Now, in your case, filing a police report is unnecessary if the damages sustained to your car do not exceed $500, although it is always smart to report any accident to the police just in case a dispute comes up. But whether or not you filed the police report, you should still be covered by your auto insurer regardless of who was at fault in the accident.

Before calling the auto insurance company, though, it would be good to consider the severity of the damage. If you can shoulder all the cost incurred for repairs without considerable difficulty, then filing small claims should be the last thing in your mind. Car insurers keep track of inquiries for possible claims and may use this information to raise your rates in the future.

Brian

Portland, ME

Brian, it is never really too early to be thinking about life insurance. It is always better to have insurance even though you have no need of it than go through the hassle of not having yourself insured, not to mention all the trouble your family would be having. It is always better to plan ahead.

Anyway, to answer your question, there are different rules set by different life insurance companies. Some would require you to avail of life insurance which is a certain amount multiple to your annual income. But the best thing to do is to just think of what would fit your needs in consideration of the people you would be leaving in the event of your death.

Estimation of your life insurance proceeds could be quite tricky. I suggest that you make a list of the possible expenses you could be having in the event of your death. Examples of the things that might be included in this list are education, mortgage payments, household expenses, etc.

Still, making this list could be difficult for you. In this case, you might want to consider seeking the advice of a financial planner there in Portland, Maine. Or you could check out Web sites of financial or life insurance companies and use their calculators there.

If you are successful in making this list, then you would have a certain idea of the expenses. But since the estimated amount changes over time because of various reasons, it is highly advisable to reassess your estimates every now and then.

Cheap Automobile Insurance Quotes San Antonio Texas TX

Reader’s Question:

Hi there, I’ve finally been able to save up to buy myself a new, well, not so new, car. However I kinda forgot about having to buy the insurance as well so the budget’s getting pretty tight. Also they say that younger drivers have to pay higher insurance premiums than most? Please share some tips on how I can get a cheap automotive insurance? I live in San Antonio, Texas by the way.

Jody

San Antonio, TX

How’s the weather in San Antonio, Texas? It’s great to hear that you’re finally getting your own car. I do understand the sacrifices you may have made in order to save up for your first car. It’s also good that you’re brushing up on the things that you will need to know before even purchasing a vehicle. An informed buyer is an empowered buyer, as they say. How I wish that automotive insurance were for free! Unfortunately, that just is not the case and yes, it will eat into your budget. The good news is, with certain older types of vehicles, one can have a cheaper car insurance premium compared to if you purchase a brand new vehicle of the same type.

It would help to ask around about the safety rating of different kinds of automobiles before you make your decision. Also in general, automotive insurance companies will offer a lower premium on a car that is cheaper to repair. so you may want to ask around on the cost of spare parts and repairs as well. Of course it is always best to shop around. There are hordes of insurance companies out there. All you have to do is compare, compare, compare! If you don’t think you are getting a good deal then feel free to walk away. Also, try browsing online for websites that offer free auto insurance prices.
